Cool running promises hot racing at Killarney Raceway’s Power Series

Posted on 6 May 2022 By Taylah Strauss

It’s no secret that cold, dense air makes racing engines run more crisply, but it’s less well known that lower track temperatures place even more emphasis on handling and setup, rather than on outright power.

Which is why you can expect closer than usual racing, spectacular spins and surprise winners at the first official winter round of the 2022 Power Series presented by Wingfield Motors at Killarney on Saturday 14 May.

Wrap up warm and get there early for a full programme of races for the headline Thermo Fires Clubmans Saloons, as well as the Alert Engines GTi Challenge and the combined BEJO Trustees Fine Cars and Laude Classic Cars.

Then there are the hugely powerful Pirelli V8 Masters, where all the cars are identical and it’s all down to driver skill and nerve (the cars are a real handful on a cold track!) as well as the Spitfire Furniture Sports & GT cars.

Tyre temperature and suspension setup are even more crucial in cold weather for the riders of the South Superbikes/Superbike Challenge/Masters/600s, the Strato Technology Clubman/Classic/Breakfast Run Motorcycles and the Bridgestone Super Twin Cup 650 and Super Sport 300 Motorcycles. Get it right and you’re a hero!

Pre-book at Computicket or pay at the gate; Qualifying starts at 8:00am and you get a whole day of world-class motor racing on two and four wheels for R80 for adults, R20 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12; Western Province Motor Club members also get in free.

There’s ample parking all around the circuit, so bring your beach umbrella or gazebo, bring your picnic basket and your cooler box, light up your skottelbraai, park next to one of our brick braais, or just pick a spot on one of our shaded grandstands and make the day your own.

There are outlets around the facility serving hot snacks and cold beverages – as well as children’s play areas, including the famous Kiddies’ Korner, the coolest party zone on the West Coast, which is available for hire year-round. On Race Day your kids get to use it absolutely free!

Spectators are free to move around throughout the day; grab a spot on the free shuttle service and watch the action from different vantage points. The pits are always open to spectators, so you can also see the cars and motorcycles up close.

Killarney cares about your health and well-being; wearing a mask is no longer required outdoors, but please remember to wear your mask over your nose and mouth when entering one of our indoor venues and keep a social distancing space of at least one metre between persons at all times.
