1. Lesotho
Just a few hours’ drive from Johannesburg or Durban, Lesotho is one of the easiest and most budget-friendly international trips for South Africans. Nicknamed the “Kingdom in the Sky,” this landlocked mountain nation offers breathtaking scenery, crisp air, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for recharging.

Food is fresh and affordable — think peri-peri prawns and grilled fish straight from the sea. 3. Eswatini
Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) is small, but it packs a lot into its borders — vibrant culture, wildlife, and mountainous beauty. It’s a favourite for South African road-trippers, thanks to short travel times, low costs, and welcoming locals.
The Ezulwini Valley, often called the “Valley of Heaven,” is filled with affordable guest lodges and craft markets. Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary offers rustic chalets and budget-friendly game drives where you can spot zebra and antelope without the hefty Kruger price tag. 4. Namibia
Namibia might be known for its vast deserts and dramatic landscapes, but it doesn’t have to be an expensive trip. If you plan well and drive instead of fly, it’s entirely possible to enjoy an affordable Namibian adventure.
Camping is big here — many lodges and national parks offer clean, scenic campsites with basic amenities. From the Fish River Canyon to the dunes of Sossusvlei, the landscapes are unforgettable. If you’re coming from the Northern Cape, you can cross at Vioolsdrift and explore the southern region without venturing too far north. 5. Botswana
Botswana has a reputation for high-end safaris, but with some clever planning, you can enjoy this wildlife paradise affordably. The key is to skip the private lodges and focus on self-drive or community-run campsites.
Kasane, near the Chobe River, is an excellent entry point for budget travellers. It’s close to the Chobe National Park and offers affordable guesthouses and boat cruises. Alternatively, visit the Tuli Block in the east, where you’ll find scenic bush camps and self-catering lodges. Travelling by car also gives you flexibility and the chance to share costs with friends.
6. Zimbabwe
While Zimbabwe’s economy has had its ups and downs, the country remains one of Southern Africa’s most beautiful and culturally rich destinations. For South Africans, the favourable exchange rate means your rand stretches far here.
Victoria Falls is the obvious highlight, but lesser-known gems like Great Zimbabwe, Matobo Hills, or Lake Kariba offer incredible experiences at lower prices. Budget guesthouses and backpackers’ lodges are plentiful, and you can even take a short flight to Vic Falls or drive through Beitbridge if you’re feeling adventurous.
