South Africa’s most underrated seaside walks

Posted on 9 February 2026 By Zoe Erasmus

South Africa’s coastline is famous for its big names, the promenades everyone knows, the trails that show up on every travel list, the spots that feel busy before you even arrive, writes Zoë Erasmus.

But tucked between those headline moments are quieter seaside walks that don’t try to impress. They just exist, steadily and beautifully, waiting for the people who are willing to slow down.

These underrated seaside walks trade crowds for calm and spectacle for small, grounding pleasures: the sound of waves close enough to hear your own thoughts, paths that invite wandering rather than conquering, and coastlines that still feel personal. From clifftop strolls to wide, wind-swept beaches, these are the walks that remind you why being by the sea feels like a reset — no itinerary required.

1. St Blaize Trail, Mossel Bay (Western Cape)

Everyone knows Mossel Bay as a pit stop, not a linger place — which is exactly why the St Blaize Trail feels like a secret. This clifftop path runs along rugged rock faces with the Indian Ocean crashing dramatically below. It’s short enough for a gentle stroll, but scenic enough to feel cinematic.

What makes it special is the contrast: wild ocean on one side, sleepy coastal town on the other. You’ll pass tidal pools, historic caves, and lookout points where you’ll want to stop “just for a second” and end up standing there for ten minutes.

Why it’s underrated: Mossel Bay’s reputation doesn’t match its scenery — and this walk benefits hugely from low expectations.

2. Umdloti Beach Promenade, KwaZulu-Natal

Umdloti sits quietly between Umhlanga and Ballito, and that middle-child energy works in its favour. The Umdloti Beach promenade is an easy, breezy walk that hugs the shoreline, perfect for sunrise or golden hour when the ocean turns silver-blue.

Dolphins are frequent visitors, the path is flat and accessible, and there’s something deeply calming about how unfussy this stretch of coast feels. No big attractions, no rush — just sea, sky, and steady footsteps.

Why it’s underrated: It lacks Umhlanga’s buzz, but gains serenity in return.

3. Cannon Rocks to Boknes Strand Coastal Walk, Eastern Cape

This is the kind of walk you stumble upon and wonder why no one told you about it sooner. The Cannon Rocks–Boknes Strand coastline is quiet, wide, and beautifully unspoilt. Think soft dunes, empty beaches, and the feeling that you’ve walked into someone else’s screensaver.

It’s ideal for long, meditative walks where you don’t need to think about routes or landmarks — just follow the ocean and turn back when you’re ready. The light here is especially lovely in the late afternoon.

Why it’s underrated: The Eastern Cape’s coastline doesn’t shout for attention, but it absolutely deserves it.

4. Strandloper Trail, West Coast

The full Strandloper Trail is a multi-day commitment, but the shorter sections near Dwarskersbos and Elands Bay are perfect for a day walk. This is West Coast walking at its best: pale sand, cold Atlantic air, and a sense of vastness that clears your head instantly.

Unlike greener coastal paths, this one feels almost lunar — stark, minimal, and deeply grounding. Bring a jacket, even in summer, and let the wind do its thing.

Why it’s underrated: The West Coast is often seen as harsh or empty — but that’s exactly its magic.

5. Keurboomstrand to Lookout Beach, Plettenberg Bay

Plettenberg Bay is no secret, but this beach-to-beach coastal stretch somehow flies under the radar. Starting near Keurboomstrand and walking toward Lookout Beach, you get river mouths, wide sandy beaches, and gentle waves that make the whole experience feel soft and spacious.

It’s an easy walk with a constantly changing backdrop — waterbirds, shifting sandbanks, and mountains in the distance. You don’t need to be a hiker to enjoy it; this is a wander, not a workout.

Why it’s underrated: Plett’s reputation for glamour overshadows how quietly beautiful its walks can be.

6. Port Alfred West Beach to Kelly’s Beach, Eastern Cape

Port Alfred rarely tops anyone’s travel wishlist, but its coastal walk between West Beach and Kelly’s Beach is a sleeper hit. The path alternates between sand and rocky outcrops, with just enough elevation to give you good views without demanding too much effort.

It’s peaceful, local, and refreshingly unpolished. On a weekday, you might share the path with a dog walker or two — and that’s about it.

Why it’s underrated: Port Alfred keeps a low profile, and this walk mirrors that quiet charm.

Why these walks matter

Not every seaside experience needs to be iconic, photographed, or validated online. These walks remind you that the ocean doesn’t care about hype — it shows up the same way every day. And sometimes, the best coastal moments happen when no one’s watching.

If you’re craving salt air without spectacle, these underrated seaside walks deliver exactly that: space, stillness, and the simple pleasure of walking beside the sea.
