The announcement was made at the 2026 awards ceremony in Lima, Peru, on Wednesday evening.
Executive Chef James Gaag took to the stage to accept the accolade on behalf of the La Colombe team, marking another significant moment for the restaurant and South Africa’s culinary industry.
‘We are incredibly honoured to be recognised among the world’s best restaurants. It is a very special moment for the entire team, whose dedication and passion make La Colombe what it is,’ said Gaag.
‘To be able to represent our home city of Cape Town and South Africa on this international stage is something we never take for granted. We are grateful to the judges, our guests and everyone who has supported us along the way. This recognition belongs to every member of our team.’
Bringing South African excellence to the world stage
The 50 Best Restaurants (previously the World’s 50 Best Restaurants) brings together leading dining destinations from across the globe, offering an annual snapshot of the talent, creativity and innovation shaping the international restaurant industry.
La Colombe’s latest achievement follows its continued presence on the prestigious list, having placed 55th in the world in 2025 and 49th in 2024, when it was also named The Best Restaurant in Africa.
For the La Colombe team, this recognition represents more than a ranking. It is an acknowledgement of the collective effort, consistency and commitment that go into creating the restaurant’s dining experience, and an opportunity to showcase South African culinary talent on a global platform.
Over the years, La Colombe has continued to build its international reputation through its distinctive approach to dining, led by Executive Chef James Gaag and supported by a dedicated team of chefs and hospitality professionals.
‘It is a wonderful honour to see La Colombe recognised among the world’s best restaurants. I am incredibly proud of James and the entire team. It takes a great deal of commitment from everyone involved to deliver what we do, day after day, and this recognition is a reflection of their hard work,’ says Chef Proprietor Scot Kirton, commenting on the achievement.
‘We are grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey and to our guests, whose continued support means so much to us.’
