According to SABC News, SANParks launched the new attraction over the weekend as part of efforts to expand the experiences available to visitors. The zipline is also expected to encourage tourists to spend more time at the park and make use of its accommodation facilities.

SANParks Head of Communication JP Louw said the attraction could help increase the park’s appeal, particularly among younger visitors.

“We are hoping that what the zipline will do is to just grow the traction of this area,” Louw said, adding that SANParks expects the attraction to bring a more youthful clientele to the park.

The new activity comes as Golden Gate Highlands National Park continues to broaden its tourism offering. The park is already home to the Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre, which showcases the area’s rich fossil heritage and has been positioned as a potential tourism and economic hub for the eastern Free State.

A boost for local tourism

SANParks hopes the zipline will do more than provide an adrenaline-fuelled activity. The organisation also sees it as a way to increase visitor numbers and encourage tourists to stay overnight rather than simply passing through the area.

Louw said attracting more visitors could also benefit surrounding communities as tourism activity grows.

The combination of outdoor adventure, dramatic mountain scenery and attractions such as the Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre gives visitors more reasons to explore Golden Gate Highlands National Park as part of a longer Free State getaway.
