The price of fuel could hit a record high in South Africa in October 2026, so motorists should expect to fork out more at the pumps. We detail the possible increases in petrol and diesel prices, which may realise on 7 October 2026.

Compared to what was previously forecasted, the estimated price of fuel in October 2026 could increase even further, as forecasted by the Central Energy Fund (CEF) and compared to what we previously reported. At the beginning of next month, the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) will publicise the official prices.
The price of petrol could see an increase of R2.17 and R2.29 per litre for 93 ULP/LRP and 95 ULP/LRP, respectively. The price of diesel could rise further, seeing increases of R1.87 per litre for 0.05% sulphur (500ppm) and R2.22 per litre for 0.005% sulphur (50ppm). The price of illuminating paraffin has a projected increase of R2.39 per litre, also higher than projected lately.

Transport costs for imported fuel continue to rise, based on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and between Russia and Ukraine. The oil price at the time of writing is $103 per barrel, which was last this high in May 2026. Should these increases remain for next month, October 2026 will have record high fuel prices. Inland, the cost of petrol and diesel were last R28.06 per litre in June 2026 and R31.18 per litre in May 2026, respectively.

- Petrol 95 ULP/LRP – R28.34 per litre
- Diesel 500ppm (wholesale) – R30.11 per litre
- Diesel 50ppm (wholesale) – R31.01 per litre
