Scenic hikes under 10km in Mpumalanga

Posted on 21 July 2026 By Bianca Muller

If your ideal hike involves incredible views without committing to an all-day trek, Mpumalanga delivers in spades. Home to dramatic escarpments, waterfalls and one of South Africa’s most iconic canyons, the province is packed with shorter hiking trails that still leave a lasting impression.

These hikes under 10km offer plenty of scenery with a manageable distance.

Leopard Trail, Blyde River Canyon

Distance: Approximately 6–7km return

One of the best ways to appreciate the sheer scale of the Blyde River Canyon is on foot. The Leopard Trail winds through grassland and indigenous vegetation before revealing spectacular views across one of the world’s largest green canyons. Keep an eye out for fascinating rock formations, soaring birds of prey and the changing colours of the cliffs as the light shifts throughout the day.

It’s a moderate hike with a few steeper sections, but the views make every step worthwhile.

Belvedere Day Walk, Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve

Distance: Approximately 10km

If you’d like to spend a little longer soaking up Mpumalanga’s scenery, the Belvedere Day Walk is a fantastic choice. The circular route takes hikers through a mix of bushveld and rocky terrain, with several viewpoints overlooking the canyon and surrounding mountains.

This is one of those hikes where you’ll find yourself stopping regularly – partly to catch your breath on the climbs, but mostly to admire the scenery.

Loerie Trail, Sabie

Distance: 10km circular

Sabie has earned its reputation as one of South Africa’s hiking capitals, and the Loerie Trail is an excellent introduction. The route meanders through indigenous forest, crosses streams and passes beautiful waterfalls before climbing gently to scenic viewpoints.

If you’re after that classic Mpumalanga combination of towering trees, flowing water and mountain vistas, this trail ticks all the boxes.

Forest Falls Nature Walk, Sabie

Distance: Approximately 3.2km circular

Short on distance but big on scenery, the Forest Falls Nature Walk is ideal for families or anyone wanting a gentler outing. The trail follows forest paths and river crossings before arriving at the picturesque Forest Falls.

The surrounding indigenous forest creates a peaceful atmosphere, especially in the early morning when birdsong fills the air.

Mac Mac Pools Trail

Distance: Approximately 3km return

Most travellers stop at the famous Mac Mac Falls before continuing their journey, but it’s worth setting aside a little more time for the nearby Mac Mac Pools. The trail follows the river through grassland and rocky outcrops before reaching crystal-clear natural pools that are perfect for cooling off on warmer days.

Pack a picnic and you’ll easily lose a few hours here.

Fanie Botha Hiking Trail (day section)

Distance: Up to 10km

While the full Fanie Botha Trail is a multi-day adventure, several sections can be tackled as shorter day hikes. These routes showcase everything that makes Mpumalanga special, from rolling mountain slopes and pine plantations to indigenous forests and cascading streams.

If you’re looking for a taste of one of South Africa’s classic hiking trails without committing to the full route, this is a great option.

God’s Window Rainforest Trail

Distance: Approximately 2km

God’s Window may be famous for its viewpoint, but don’t skip the rainforest trail. The short route descends into an indigenous Afromontane forest filled with towering trees, moss-covered rocks and fascinating plant life. On a clear day, the viewpoint offers sweeping views across the Lowveld that seem to stretch forever.

It’s a relatively short walk, but one that’s packed with character.

Tips before you lace up

Even if you’re sticking to shorter hikes, a little preparation goes a long way.

  • Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, especially after rain.
  • Carry enough drinking water, even for shorter trails.
  • Download offline maps if you’re heading into areas with limited cell reception.
  • Start early during summer to avoid the midday heat.
  • Leave nature exactly as you found it by taking all your litter home.
