South Coast Tourism launches new coastal farmland experiences

While KZN is renowned as the coast with the most, it also has a variety of tourism sites in the hinterland region. To boost tourism in the welcoming farmlands, Ugu South Coast Tourism launched the KZN South Coast Agri-CULTURE Tours.

The tour has six stops, all of which guarantee an authentic coastal farmland experience.

BBS Farm (Southport)

BBS Farm – named after founders Busisiwe, Bongi and Slindile – is a women-owned organisation that consists of almost 40 employees working on the farm, producing green peppers, bananas, tomatoes and macadamia nuts.

BBS Farm tours include showcasing the organically-grown produce, a tour of the hydroponic system and a macadamia tour. You can also go fishing at the dam.

Operating hours: Tours at 10am to 10: 45am, and 1pm to 1:45pm weekdays; 11am to 11:45am, and 12:45pm to 1:30pm on weekends.

Animal Farm at B’s Guesthouse (Harding)

B’s Guesthouse is a quintessential bed and breakfast outside the farming town of Harding. Situated en route to the Eastern Cape and Durban, it is the perfect pit stop.

You can go fishing at the dam, take a hike through a macadamia trees, or meet the animals on the farm, including emus, Bun Bun the rabbit, and Hamlet, a potbellied pig.

Operating hours: 8am to 8pm (Monday to Friday), 7am to 3pm (Saturday), 11am to 3pm (Sunday).

Ubumbano Homestead (Amandawe)

On this farm, you can witness growing techniques, harvesting, and a chance to sample fresh produce. Or enjoy a picnic under the trees with home-made eats such as macadamia nut biscuits and brittle or baked mielie loaf.

Operating hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8.:0am to 4pm. Bookings essential.

Beaver Creek Coffee Estate (Port Edward)

Beaver Creek Coffee Estate is the southernmost coffee estate in the world, boasting three generations of coffee brewers.

Their Crop to Cup tour gives you an insider’s look at the coffee production process, and after you can delight at the breakfast café on the estate.

Operating hours: The Estate Café is open daily from 8am till 4pm, closed on Christmas Day. The daily Crop to Cup tour starts at 12 noon, booking is essential in holiday season. Summer season is 10 December to 5 January, Autumn from 12 April to 3 March, Winter is 3 July to 25 July, and Spring is 25 September to 7 October.

Mac Banana (Port Edward)

This family-friendly retail and entertainment facility has more than 20 activities available, including grabbing a bite at one of the four restaurants, climb the rope adventure park, trying your hand at putt putt golf, or even their archery and airgun range.

Operating hours: 8am to 5pm (Monday to Sunday out of season), 8am to 6pm (Monday to Sunday in season).

Mpenjati Coffee (Mpenjati/Munster)

Mpenjati Coffee is also a coffee carm, boasting beautiful coffee tries lining the flowing Mpenjati River.

Take a tour of the farm and view the pulping, drying, hulling, separating, grading and roasting of the coffee.

Operating hours: 8am to 4pm (Monday to Sunday) every day. The farm tour is limited to four people and pre-booking is essential.
