10 dead after cliff collapses at Brazil’s Furnas Lake

A huge rock column collapsed at Furnas Lake, a popular tourist spot just North of Sao Paolo in Brazil on 8 January 2022, killing 10 people, and injuring 32.

Authorities and police were on the scene after the cliff crumbled and fell on top of a boat in the lake, taking the lives of 10 people. Divers are searching the lake in case of more victims.

According to Al Jazeerah, at least 32 others were injured, and most of them were released from the hospital by Saturday evening.  Videos of the incident showed tourists rushing to escape from the collapsing column, which sent a large wave over the lake.

The victims’ bodies were taken to nearby Passos City, where the coroner worked to try and identify them, which was challenging because of the ‘high energy impact.’

The lake was created in 1958 for the installation of a hydroelectric plant and has since become a popular tourist attraction. Officials suggest that the recent heavy rains, which caused much flooding, may have had an effect on the rock coming loose.
