From 22 to 28 September, 21 national parks managed by SANParks will grant free day entry to all South African citizens.
A chance to reconnect with heritage
Among the participating parks is the iconic Kruger National Park, although no KwaZulu-Natal parks are on this year’s list.
“National Parks Week has seen an influx of day visitors in all participating parks since its inception in 2006,” SANParks said in a statement, as previously reported by Citizen.
“This initiative not only gives South Africans an opportunity to connect with their natural heritage but also builds pride in the cultural and historical treasures safeguarded within our parks.”
SANParks added that the campaign highlights the role of conservation in sustainable development, made possible through partnerships with local communities, businesses, scientists, and visitors.
Why it matters
Now in its 19th year, National Parks Week has become a flagship campaign for education and awareness around conservation. It offers locals a unique opportunity to experience the country’s wild beauty—whether spotting wildlife, exploring heritage sites, or simply enjoying a picnic in nature—without the barrier of entry fees.

Note: The offer is for day visitors only. Normal fees for accommodation, guided tours, and other paid activities still apply.
