A 35-year-old man has passed away after encountering a great white shark at Sydney’s Little Bay Beach on Wednesday afternoon 16 February 2022.

Paramedics described the scene as ‘horrific’ after receiving a frantic call following the incident. ‘Unfortunately, this person had suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of the attack and there was nothing paramedics could do when we arrived on the scene’ Inspector Lucky Phrachanh from NSW ambulance told ABC news.

Police searching the area found remains of the individual after the incident, which took place in front of eyewitnesses on the beach. This has shocked the community, who view Little Bay as a tranquil and safe cove.

Later in the day, search teams placed green dye in the water to work out the movement of ocean currents as they searched for further remains, and a rescue helicopter continued to hover over the area.

It should be emphasised however that this was the first fatal shark attack at a Sydney beach in almost 60 years, and that when there is an incident with a shark, it is likely because the shark confused the bather for prey and acted on its instincts.
