8.0 magnitude earthquake rocks Peru

On Sunday 27 May, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Amazon Rainforest in northern Peru. The earthquake occurred in an isolated area and killed one person.

11 other people in Peru as well as seven people in Ecuador have been injured, according to CNN.

AP News has reported that the earthquake happened at 2.14am local time. The quake centered in a nature reserve 92 kilometers east of Yurimaguas.

According to U.S Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred 114km below the earth’s surface which minimized the impact. Earthquakes closer to the surface are far more destructive.
