According to Travelnews, The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has opened up nine weekly slots under third- and fourth-freedom rights between the two nations and has granted Air Europa rights to operate three flights per week.
Though the carrier has secured its rights, several regulatory and operational approvals must still be completed before take-off can be scheduled. Other airlines may apply, but Air Europa will receive priority if multiple applications are submitted.
Why it matters for travellers
A direct service between Spain and South Africa could significantly simplify travel plans for both South African tourists heading to Europe and Europeans exploring South Africa. Travel specialists suggest that favourable pricing will be key to the route’s success. Convenient non-stop access only works if the fares make it worthwhile for passengers.
What to keep an eye on
With six weekly slots still unallocated, the industry will be watching whether other carriers follow suit or whether Air Europa moves swiftly to finalise schedules. For travellers, this announcement signals possible new connectivity between the two regions, but the full route launch is still pending until the remaining steps fall into place.
