All aboard the tequila train

Posted on 20 February 2019

The tequila train in Mexico is not quite the same as the one you might do with a group of friends at a bar. It is in fact an actual train that traverses through Jalisco from Guadalajara to Tequila, on which passengers can sip their favourite spirit.

The Jose Cuervo Express has been in operation since 2012. Passengers can choose one of three classes to travel on: the express cars, premium cars and the premium plus cars. There are three express wagons. The premium wagons can accommodate 52 passengers and are equipped with seats as well as tables that sit up to four passengers each. The premium plus wagons are the most luxurious of the lot, with private tables and varied rooms, along with a bar, bartender and two waiters. Each coach has wooden finishes, comfortable seats and exquisite attention to detail in its interior.

Like the wine train, only better. Tequila bound.

There are also three off-train experiences offered along the way that correlate with the class the passenger is travelling on: express, premium and premium plus. Experiences include a visit to La Rojeña, Jose Cuervo’s distillery, the agave fields, Mexican snacks, cocktails prepared with Jose Cuervo Special, a professional tasting guide, leisure time to explore the town of Tequila and more.

Riding the Jose Cuervo Express costs $110 (roughly R1,552) per person. The premium experience costs $120 (approximately R1,693) and includes all of the above, except for the cocktails prepared with Jose Cuervo Especial. The premium plus experience costs $130 (roughly R1,835) and includes access to the onboard bar, cocktails prepared with tequila Tradicional and Jose Cuervo Especial, and a tour of the Reserva de la Familiar cellar.

The company’s distillery, La Rojeña, is said to be the oldest in the Americas, and has been producing tequila for 250 years. The town of Tequila’s agave landscapes and ancient industrial amenities are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. For a sneak peak of the Jose Cuervo Express experience, watch below.
