Bheki Cele threatens closure of Cape Town beaches

Posted on 17 December 2020

Police Minister Bheki Cele said that government would reconsider its choice to include Cape Town in the list of beaches that are closed for the festive season, if COVID-19 regulations are not adhered to by the public.

Lion’s Head and Clifton Beach.

Cele paid a visit to Camps Bay, Clifton and two other Cape Town beaches on Reconciliation Day [December 16] to check in on social distancing practices and adherence to lockdown regulations.

Suffice to say Minister Cele was less than impressed and shut down a film shoot on Camps Bay beach in the process. The City of Cape Town have plans to approach the Western Cape High Court for an interdict against police interference.

The escalated enforcement comes after President Cyril Rampahosa addressed the nation on Monday, December 14.

The Garden Route and Eastern Cape have officially been declared hotspots as the country is experiencing a second wave of COVID-19 infections.

A number of new lockdown rules are in place for the festive season, which has been marked as December 16 2020 to January 3 2021, including both dates.
