The rise of circular migration: why South Africans are coming home

For a generation of South Africans, the dream of working abroad isn’t a permanent escape, it’s a journey with a homecoming built in. A new report from The TEFL Academy highlights a growing trend called circular migration, where young professionals venture overseas to gain experience and savings, only to eventually return to the warmth of Mzansi.

Home is more than a place

While higher salaries and global opportunities lure South Africans abroad, the real pull back home is deeply personal. According to the survey of 173 internationally experienced South Africans:

  • 77% miss spending time with family and lifelong friends.
  • 67% long for South Africa’s humour, warmth, and social culture.
  • 56% crave the outdoors, sunshine, and unbeatable lifestyle.
  • 50% return for that unmistakable sense of belonging.

“Landing at the airport and hearing our accents again—it hits you. South Africa has soul that cannot be replicated,” shared one respondent, echoing a sentiment that resonates across social media communities, where hashtags like #HomeAtLast and #MzansiCalling have started to trend.

The global advantage comes home

Living abroad isn’t just for Instagram-worthy travel, it’s a career and personal growth accelerator. Returnees report:

  • Global perspective: 4.19/5
  • Personal growth, confidence, adaptability: 4.41/5

This international experience makes them highly sought after by local employers, injecting new skills and fresh ideas into South Africa’s workforce.

Life back in Mzansi

Reconnecting with home isn’t only about nostalgia—it’s improving mental and emotional well-being. Survey results show:

  • Overall life satisfaction: 3.41/5
  • Mental/emotional well-being: 3.62/5
  • 53% have already moved back

Respondents describe the value of ordinary moments: Sunday braais, birthday milestones, or quiet Tuesday evenings with childhood friends. “Those moments can’t translate across time zones,” one participant reflected.

A growing trend

Data backs the story: nearly 28,000 South Africans returned home in 2022, and recruitment firms report a 70% surge in enquiries from South Africans in the UK, Australia, and Canada wanting to come back.

The report suggests a new narrative for migration—not a final goodbye, but a purposeful chapter in life. For many, the overseas adventure enhances the homecoming, proving that no matter how far you roam, South Africa always has the final word.

Whether it’s for family, friends, or the sheer cultural heartbeat of the nation, the message is clear: South Africans are embracing circular migration, and home is calling louder than ever.
