The incident took place in the Crocodile Bridge section of the park, where several visitors had stopped to observe a lion. While most tourists remained inside their vehicles as required by park regulations, one visitor exited his car to take photographs, placing himself and others at risk.

Another visitor recorded the moment on video and shared it on social media, where it quickly attracted widespread attention and criticism.

According to park authorities, the tourist was identified and fined R2 500 upon arrival at Crocodile Bridge Gate. Officials reiterated that leaving a vehicle outside designated areas is a violation of park rules created to protect both visitors and wildlife.

Why the rule exists

Regulations in Kruger National Park clearly state that guests must remain inside their vehicles during self-drive safaris unless they are in designated rest camps or approved stopping points. Wild animals may appear relaxed, but they remain unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

In the video circulating online, the individual can be seen walking away from his vehicle while a lion rests nearby. Park communications manager Rey Thakhuli reminded visitors that unsafe behaviour should be reported to officials to prevent incidents.

Beyond personal risk, actions like these can disturb wildlife and create dangerous situations for other visitors gathered at sightings. Congestion and unsafe movement around animals remain common causes of safety incidents in busy sections of the park.

A reminder for responsible safari travel

Kruger National Park welcomes millions of visitors each year, many experiencing close wildlife encounters for the first time. Rangers continue to emphasise that responsible viewing practices help protect animals, visitors, and the long-term sustainability of the park.

Key safari guidelines include:

  • Remain inside your vehicle unless signage permits otherwise
  • Maintain a respectful distance from wildlife
  • Follow park rules and ranger instructions at all times
  • Report unsafe behaviour to park authorities

Spectacular sightings are often the highlight of a Kruger visit, but experienced guides agree that patience and respect lead to safer and more rewarding wildlife encounters.
