Cruise ship evacuates hurricane victims

Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, the cruise ship called the Grand Celebration, evacuated 1,550 people to Florida

At least 45 people are dead following the Category 5 hurricane with that number expected to rise and 700,000 people have been left homeless, according to the United Nations. 

On their Facebook page, the company, announced that they had cancelled holiday departures for the beginning of September while they offer assistance to those on the islands. 

“The Grand Celebration will be loaded with food, water, and other supplies, as well as first responders and volunteers. The ship will transport Bahamian residents who were stranded in South Florida, due to Hurricane Dorian, home…The Grand Celebration will return to the Port of Palm Beach on September 7, with Bahamian residents who wish to evacuate to the U.S. and have proper documentation,” said their post. 

The cruise ship docked with the evacuees at the Port of Palm Beach on Saturday. The cruise line had spent the day before clearing potential evacuees, including vetting their visa and passport documentation so that they would be allowed into the US, according to Seatrade Cruise News. 

Carnival Cruise Line also announced on Twitter that they will also be helping transport donated goods from South Florida to the islands.
