For travellers who prioritise peace of mind as much as adventure, the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) rankings offer an indispensable guide to the continent’s safest countries to explore in 2026, reports IOL.

Compiled by the World Population Review, the GPI measures societal safety, conflict levels and militarisation across 23 indicators, helping discerning travellers choose destinations where stability meets spectacular experiences.

1. Mauritius

Topping the list as Africa’s most peaceful destination, this island paradise boasts pristine beaches, lush interior landscapes and a welcoming multicultural vibe. It also ranks impressively on the global stage for safety.

2. Botswana

Famed for its exceptional wildlife and safari experiences, Botswana combines natural wonders with a reputation for relative tranquillity — perfect for nature lovers seeking both beauty and peace.

3. Sierra Leone
