Emirates has taken a major leap in inflight connectivity, unveiling the world’s first Starlink-powered installation on its flagship A380 aircraft.

The development marks a new chapter for one of aviation’s most recognisable double-deckers, long known for redefining long-haul luxury.
The first upgraded A380 has now returned to Dubai after installation and certification in Newquay, United Kingdom. More aircraft are set to follow throughout 2026 as Emirates accelerates a fleet-wide rollout of next-generation onboard internet.
A thousand-fold jump in inflight connectivity
The A380 was among the earliest commercial aircraft to offer passenger Wi-Fi, though early systems delivered less than 1 Mbps across the entire aircraft. The new Starlink configuration changes that dramatically.
With three antennas installed on each A380, Emirates says bandwidth increases by a thousand-fold, enabling speeds and reliability closer to what travellers experience on the ground. In total, the system can deliver more than 2 Gbps across the aircraft.
For passengers, that means seamless streaming, gaming, browsing, video calls and remote work at cruising altitude. The service will be complimentary across all cabins, with simple onboard access.

Future updates will also introduce live TV streaming over Starlink, first on personal devices and later integrated into seatback screens.
Engineering a first for the world’s largest passenger jet
The Airbus A380 presents unique engineering demands due to its size, capacity and double-deck layout. Emirates’ Starlink setup has been specifically adapted for this environment, including additional wireless access points and a third antenna to support the aircraft’s high passenger load.
Optimised inter-deck integration ensures a stable connection throughout the cabin, regardless of seat class or usage demand.
A fleet-wide rollout already underway
Installation work will soon shift to Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai, allowing the airline to scale deployment more quickly across its long-haul fleet.
So far, 25 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft already feature Starlink connectivity, and the first A380 has now officially joined the programme. More than 650,000 passengers have already experienced Starlink-enabled flights across the airline’s network.
A broader push to elevate the onboard experience
The Starlink rollout forms part of a wider investment in the Emirates customer experience, including one of the most extensive retrofit programmes in global aviation.
To date, 93 aircraft have been refurbished with Premium Economy cabins, upgraded Business Class seating, redesigned First Class suites and refreshed Economy cabins. Across the fleet, inflight entertainment systems now offer more than 6,500 channels.
On the human side of the experience, Emirates has also invested in service training, launching its US$8 million Centre of Hospitality Excellence in 2025. The facility trains more than 25,000 cabin crew in hospitality standards designed to elevate service at 40,000 feet.
