A fire that raged Du Toit’s Kloof Pass in the Cape Winelands on 26 October has been contained.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) Fire Services and CapeNature confirmed the fire was declared contained by 10pm and fire trucks were able to return to base.

Wildfire ravages Kenya's Tsavo National Park

‘There is still a small area that is smoldering, high on an inaccessible cliff, but this should die out of its own accord as it is surrounded by rocks, preventing access to vegetation,’ CWDM said. The fire burned on the slopes above the N1 just after the Rawsonville weighbridge.

Fresh ground teams will replace the current crews this morning. These teams will continue with monitoring and mopping-up activities throughout the day. Should there be no flare-ups, Fire Service teams will stand down late this evening.

The cause of the blaze is unknown and the extent of damage has not been asessed yet.
