FlySafair plane grazed by airstairs at Cape Town International – no injuries reported

A routine morning at Cape Town International Airport took an unexpected twist on Monday when a FlySafair Boeing 737-800, flight FA112, was grazed by a ground handling airstairs vehicle. The minor collision, which occurred at stand A9 around 11:15am, caused a small fuel leak, prompting a swift safety response.

Minor collision, major safety protocols

According to FlySafair, the right wing of the aircraft came into contact with the passenger stairs vehicle while no passengers were on board. “The contact caused a minor fuel leak, and as a precaution, airport fire and rescue services were activated,” the airline confirmed. Firefighting foam was applied to contain the spill, following standard safety procedures.

No injuries were reported, and a standby aircraft was deployed to operate the scheduled service to O.R. Tambo International Airport.

Airport response and ongoing investigation

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) said their emergency teams responded immediately, securing the area and ensuring airside safety protocols were followed. “The situation was safely managed. Flights are continuing, and the incident is being investigated,” ACSA noted.

FlySafair emphasized its full cooperation with authorities and reassured the public that passenger and crew safety remains the airline’s highest priority. The affected aircraft has been taken out of service pending a full technical inspection.

Context: Cape Town airport’s rough week

The collision comes on the heels of other operational disruptions at Cape Town International. The airport recently faced a power outage that temporarily forced operations to run on generators, and municipal water supply repairs caused short-lived service interruptions.

Social media users expressed surprise at the timing, with some joking about Cape Town International’s “eventful week,” while aviation enthusiasts praised the quick response by airport emergency teams.

What it means for passengers

While the incident caused no injuries and minimal operational disruption, it highlights the importance of stringent ground handling procedures. Experts note that even minor collisions can have serious consequences if not managed correctly, and Monday’s swift containment reflects well on both FlySafair and ACSA.

For now, Cape Town travellers can expect normal operations to continue, with the investigation providing insights to prevent future airstairs incidents.
