Freya the walrus has had her own sculpture built along the coast of Oslo, in commemoration of her life.
The sculpture is a lifesize art piece of Freya lying on her side on the Kongen marina shores.
An online campaign rose $25 000 to fund the building of the sculpture.
The walrus frequented the Oslo coast, attracting wildlife enthusiasts, locals, and tourists until authorities decided to euthanise her in 2022 due to public safety concerns. Her death caused widespread criticism.
Sculptor Astri Tonoian told the BBC, ‘This is how humans treat wild nature, but it is also how humans treat humans. This is how we treated Freya. And so, I will call the statue For Our Sins.’
The campaign organiser further shared that ‘I started this because I’m furious about the way the [Norwegian] Fisheries Directorate and the state handled this situation.’
Director General of Fisheries Frank Bakke-Jensen said that the move to euthanise Freya was based on ‘an overall assessment of the continued threat to human safety.’
