This summer, the serene coastal wilderness of Grootbos Private Nature Reserve will transform into the setting for one of the most exclusive sporting events of the year.

From 8–11 December 2025, the reserve will host the inaugural Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Final, bringing the world’s elite grandmasters to the Western Cape for a showdown unlike any other.
Although the championship rounds themselves remain closed to spectators, the players, who will be accommodated across Grootbos’ luxurious lodges—will be treated to a rare immersion in the reserve’s pristine fynbos landscapes, ocean views, and exceptional hospitality. For four days, chess strategy and natural splendour will meet in a truly secluded environment.

Tucked between the mountains and Walker Bay and set within the globally significant Cape Floral Kingdom, Grootbos offers an idyllic blend of seclusion and sophistication. Its two five-star lodges, Garden Lodge and Forest Lodge, along with a pair of private-use villas, will host the 25 highest-ranked chess players on the planet as they compete for the tour’s ultimate title.

The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour is a bold new global competition inspired by the high-end spectacle of Formula 1. Each stop on the tour brings the world’s top players to extraordinary venues around the world. The format uses Chess960, a variant that shuffles the starting positions of the pieces, demanding quick thinking, creative play, and fresh tactical approaches every round. Among the major names expected to compete are Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, and Ian Nepomniachtchi.
By serving as the host for the season finale, where the overall champion will be crowned, Grootbos continues to cement its status as a destination for one-of-a-kind, high-end experiences. The event underscores South Africa’s growing appeal as a setting for global gatherings that prioritise privacy, nature, and thoughtful design just as much as world-class performance.
