The unexpected encounter was caught on video and quickly spread across social media.

The footage shows the primate strolling up to a tourist’s back door. At first it seems curious. Then it makes its move. With surprising confidence, the monkey grabs the box of fried chicken and settles in to eat while the startled woman looks on. The moment is both funny and unforgettable.

As shared by the South African, wildlife encounters are one of the joys of travelling in South Africa, but this incident offers a reminder that animals do not follow visitor rules. Primates are known to be opportunistic when food is in sight.

Reactions online ranged from laughter to concern. Some viewers joked that the monkey deserved its own special KFC meal. Others pointed out the importance of responsible human and wildlife interaction, especially in protected areas.

Tour guides are now reminding visitors to store food safely, even when relaxing at a campsite or on a balcony. Leaving meals unattended can attract wildlife in unexpected ways and may place both people and animals at risk.

Fortunately no one was harmed. The video serves as a humorous yet cautionary snapshot of how wild South Africa’s wilderness can be.
