Indonesia moves toward ethical tourism with elephant ride ban

Indonesia has taken a major step toward more ethical wildlife tourism by banning elephant rides across the entire country, reports TNW.

The policy, introduced by the Ministry of Forestry in late 2025, comes after mounting pressure from animal welfare groups and marks the end of a once-popular attraction for many visitors to Bali and beyond.

Under the new directive, all conservation centres and parks are required to halt elephant riding programmes, with some venues, such as Bali’s Mason Elephant Park and Lodge, recently becoming the last facilities to discontinue the practice. Advocates say the move positions Indonesia as a regional leader in elephant welfare, encouraging tourism experiences that prioritise observation and respect for these remarkable animals rather than rides.

While this change may surprise travellers who grew up hearing about elephant rides as a Bali “must-do,” it reflects growing global demand for responsible and compassionate travel experiences that support animal conservation rather than exploitation.
