Kayaker drowns in Mzimkhulu River Mouth in KwaZulu-Natal

During a routine training exercise, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) received reports of a capsized kayak in the Mzimkhulu River Mouth on 4 June.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) were notified, and the NRSI rescue crew were dispatched to the scene. Police Search and Rescue and Med-Evac protocols were also initiated.

The kayak washed ashore and shortly after a body was found in the surf-line. Unfortunately, the man (70) was declared dead on arrival.

The man and his wife were longstanding NSRI supporters. ‘Police and NSRI have arranged counsellors for the family and condolences, on behalf of all services involved in the operation, are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased man,’ said NSRI Shelly Beach station commander Gary Wolmarans,
