Lions are not the king of the jungle

Posted on 14 May 2020

Lions are one of Africa’s most beloved animals. These big cats are often called the ‘king of the jungle,’ which is both factually incorrect and infuriating to wildlife experts.

Lions live in grasslands and plains and not the jungle, so if you’ve used this expression before on safari, you’re lucky if your field guide didn’t laugh at you.

Did you know? Lions are the only big cats that live in groups, known as a pride. A pride can consist of anywhere between 10 and 30 lions, depending on the availability of food and water among other factors.

Female lions or lionesses, are the glue that keep the pride together. These ferocious females do majority of the hunting and raise the cubs to be equally ferocious.

If you have ever heard a male lion roar, that sound pierces your soul and shakes every fibre of your being. Their roar can be heard from 8km away.

While the females are fatal killers, the male lion is a fierce protector of their territory. Lions are also impressive runners and can get up to a speed of 80km/h in short bursts. They can also launch themselves as far as 11m.

The lion, while an impressive apex predator, is one of the laziest animals in the world. A true cat, these beasts can almost sleep the day away.

Male lions can snooze between 18-20 hours in a day and females get in between 15-18 hours. Must be nice.

Lions are also extremely animated creatures. They cannot hide their emotions to save their nine lives.

Take a look at some fantastic photographs of expressive lions.
