MSC Cruises suspends South African voyages for December

Posted on 13 December 2021 By Taylah Strauss

MSC Cruises has announced the voluntary suspension of all domestic sailings in South Africa, effective immediately until 8 January 2022.

The suspension was prompted by the new Omicron variant. As such, all sailings of the MSC Orchestra from the port of Durban will be cancelled and refunded in the form of a voucher to use once sailings resume.

MSC Managing Director Ross Volk commented: ‘In light of the most recent evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic across South Africa, we have been in consultation with the government’s Department of Health which is working hard to understand the most up-to-date data of the virus and as health and safety is our number one priority our protocol clearly called for a temporary suspension of our forthcoming sailings with immediate effect.’

Volk also stated that they are aware that this decision will be disappointing to guests who had booked voyages, but that ‘it was made with their wellbeing in mind, as the health and safety of our guests, crew and communities we visit is our number one priority.’
