Steady winter rainfall and cooler seasonal temperatures have created favourable conditions for early flowering. In previous years, the bloom began in early August. This year, flowers were spotted by early July.

According to Discover Wildlife, winter rains and cooler spring temperatures are key triggers for mass flowering in the region.

Flowering plants in Namaqualand respond quickly to moisture in the soil and shorter daylight cycles, which prompt seeds to germinate and flowers to emerge.

South African weather services reported higher-than-average rainfall across the Northern Cape between May and June 2025 .

At the same time, the country recorded its second-warmest June on record. According to the South African Weather Service, this shows a broad shift in seasonal climate behaviour. This combination of cooler nights, moist soil and warming days can speed up the natural bloom cycle.

SANParks has confirmed that flowers are already visible along routes such as Wildeperdehoek and Kookfontein inside Namaqua National Park.

The Skilpad section is showing signs of early colour and is expected to reach fuller bloom in the coming weeks. If these light, rainy conditions continue, the full bloom is expected to be extra vivid and last well into late September. A West Coast road trip would be a great way to spend Heritage Day.
