Nine African Penguins return to the wild in SANCCOB’s latest release

After months of care and rehabilitation, nine African penguins have been given a second chance at life in the ocean, thanks to the dedicated work of the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB).

The non-profit’s team – a mix of staff and volunteers – gathered on the beach in Betty’s Bay for the release, describing the moment as one of the most rewarding parts of their conservation mission, as reported by Good Things Guy.

A short video shared by SANCCOB captured the occasion: sturdy transport boxes were gently carried from a vehicle to the sand before being opened, revealing the healthy penguins inside.

Once guided from their crates, the penguins paused briefly before waddling towards the surf, instinctively slipping into the waves and heading for the horizon – back where they belong.

“Each one is a step closer to protecting this critically endangered species, and we’re so proud to be part of their journey,” SANCCOB said.

The release also included one Cape Cormorant, adding to the organisation’s growing success in rescuing, rehabilitating, and returning seabirds to their natural habitats.

For decades, SANCCOB has been a lifeline for birds affected by oil spills, abandonment, injury, or illness – with the African penguin, now critically endangered, at the heart of its mission.

SANCCOB extended gratitude to supporters, donors, and conservation partners who make these moments possible, reminding us that every successful release is not just a win for the birds, but for the future of marine biodiversity.
