CapeNature has announced that Outeniqua World Heritage Site and Nature Reserve will introduce a permit fee from 15 December 2025, with all proceeds directed towards conservation and visitor-experience improvements.

Nestled between George and the breathtaking Outeniqua Mountains, the reserve is a favourite for hikers, trail runners and families drawn to its cool forest paths and dramatic mountain scenery. The introduction of a modest permit system of R55 per adult and R35 per child (ages 4–17), with free entry for children under four will help CapeNature maintain the area’s natural beauty and ensure its longevity. Holders of valid Wild Cards will continue to enjoy complimentary access.

Easy permit access for visitors

Travellers can secure permits ahead of time online via the CapeNature booking portal (under the Garden Route region) or simply purchase them at the main gate on arrival. CapeNature assures visitors that the system is designed for convenience, particularly during the busy summer season.

As part of the rollout, trail capacities have also been introduced. Each route now has a limit on daily visitors, and the online system will indicate when a trail is fully booked—helping preserve crowd-free paths and a more tranquil experience for nature-lovers.

What’s open?

Good news for hikers:

  • The Cradock Pass Trail is already open to the public.
  • The Kouma, George and Cradock Peak trails will reopen in phases once scheduled maintenance and signage upgrades are complete.

Most of the reserve’s trails are located on the Witfontein side, with the Kouma Trail starting from Ruiterbos. This ensures easy access whether you’re planning a quick morning walk or a full-day summit adventure.

A perfect picnic stop

Outeniqua also offers a charming picnic area near the reserve office, accommodating about 20 people. Visitors can settle at one of the benches or spread out on the grassy terrace. A second picnic spot is currently under development, and restrooms are available on-site.

Plan your visit

The reserve is open daily from 07:30 to 16:00. In summer, hikers tackling the longer George Peak or Cradock Peak trails may access the reserve as early as 06:00, with security teams checking online permits at the entrance.

For assistance or queries, CapeNature can be reached on 087 087 8250 (weekdays and Saturday mornings) or via [email protected].

With its deep valleys, towering peaks and lush sections of fynbos, Outeniqua remains one of the Western Cape’s most rewarding outdoor escapes. The new permit system ensures this treasured landscape continues to thrive so visitors can, too.
