According to travelnews.africa, President Denis Sassou Nguesso announced this week that citizens of all African countries will be able to enter the Republic of Congo without a visa from 1 January 2027. The announcement was made during Africa Day celebrations in Brazzaville, where the Congolese leader also renewed calls for freer movement across the continent and support for a single African passport.

The policy shift positions the Republic of Congo among a growing number of African nations easing travel restrictions for fellow Africans. Countries such as Rwanda, Ghana, Benin, Seychelles and The Gambia have already introduced visa-free or simplified entry policies aimed at boosting tourism, trade and regional cooperation.

For many travellers, intra-African travel remains surprisingly difficult. Visa applications, costly paperwork and limited flight connections continue to complicate movement between neighbouring countries. Analysts have long argued that reducing these barriers could unlock stronger tourism growth and economic collaboration across the continent.

According to reports, African visitors entering the Republic of Congo will no longer need to apply for visas or pay entry fees once the policy comes into effect. Authorities are still expected to clarify details around permitted stay periods and any additional entry requirements closer to the launch date.

The announcement also aligns with broader ambitions linked to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to strengthen trade and mobility between African nations. Supporters believe easier movement of people could encourage more cross-border tourism, business travel and cultural exchange.

For South African travellers, the change could simplify access to a country known for its dense rainforests, wildlife reserves and the mighty Congo Basin. At present, South Africans still need to apply for a visa before travelling to the Republic of Congo.
