After a 20-year absence, two white rhinos have been successfully reintroduced to Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park by Imvelo Safari Lodges.
After a 700 km and 17-hour journey across Zimbabwe, the two rhinos are settling in at Imvelo Ngamo Wildlife Sanctuary bordering the park.
Once released, they will become the first rhinos to roam Hwange after nearly two decades. This project will be overseen by Imvelo’s Community Rhino Conservation Initiative (CRCI), which places the animals on community land and under the custodianship of the local community.
The two rhinos, Thuza and Kusasa, were named by two generous donors from a list of options put forward by five community leaders.
Guests staying at Imvelo’s Bomani or Camelthorn Camps will have the opportunity to potentially see the Big 5 – something not possible since 2005.
This is an incredible achievement for Hwange, Imvelo and future safari-goers searching for a meaningful impact on local communities and groundbreaking conservation initiatives.
