Married couple Samantha and Trevor Burger from Franschhoek, reported as missing in the Fish River Canyon, have been declared safe.

Namibia Wildlife Resorts Spokesperson, Nelson Ashipala, confirmed that a rescue team had been dispatched to the canyon after receiving a distress call.

‘The group embarked on their journey on Saturday, 7 May 2022. They sent out a distress call after reaching the first campsite. Our team rushed to the area where they indicated they were but we did not find them there,’ he said.

The couple’s daughter, Tana Lancaster, told media outlets that her parents were fit and had hiked the canyon before. ‘They are supposed to check in every night and we hadn’t heard from them since Thursday night when they arrived to start descending on Friday’,  she said.

Namibia’s executive director of the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Theo Nghitila, stated that ‘There is no emergency’ after the couple we declared safe on Monday afternoon.

After they were reported safe, Ashipala urged all tourists and hikers that end their journey in the canyon to clock out at the Ai-Ais Hotsprings Resort before continuing to their respective destinations.
