A Norwegian Epic cruise liner passenger fell overboard on Saturday 8 June. Search efforts for the passenger, a 63-year-old Korean woman, were tragically unsuccessful and have now been called off.
The Norwegian Epic liner was sailing from Cannes, France to Palma de Mallorca, Spain when the captain turned the vessel around.
A spokesperson for the cruise liner spoke to Sky News and said as soon as the report of a passenger overboard was made, authorities were notified and began a search and rescue operation.
Passengers on the ship were asked to help with the search for the woman to no avail.
According to ABC News the woman was travelling with her husband and had left their cabin at 1am to get some fresh air. Her husband reported her missing when he woke up to find she had not returned to the cabin.
Footage on the ship’s security cameras confirmed the woman had fallen overboard.
The Sun quoted one of the passengers on board, Claire Murphy, who said, ‘They asked everyone on board to help look for that person, so a lot of people were looking out of the windows or were on the edge of the ship but no one could see anything.
It took us two hours to get back to the place where [she] [was] last seen. We stopped there for four hours to try and find the person.’
In an official statement, a spokesperson from the cruise liner said, ‘On the early morning of 8 June, a report was made that an adult female guest went overboard while the ship was sailing from Cannes, France, to Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
The authorities were immediately notified and a search and rescue operation ensued. The search has now ceased, and sadly, the guest has not been found. Our thoughts and prayers are with the individual’s family during this difficult time.’
