The Strandfontein Pavilion, home to one of South Africa’s largest and most loved tidal pools, is set for a major makeover.

Strandfontein Pavilion/City of Cape Town

According to the South African, City of Cape Town has announced plans to renovate the aging Strandfontein Pavilion, breathing new life into its iconic tidal pool, amphitheatre and surrounding coastal facilities. Built in the early nineteen eighties as a busy day resort, the site has slowly fallen into neglect. Now the city is investing in its revival.

Important work includes the removal of unsafe structures, the restoration of areas that can be saved and improved public access to the tidal pool. There are also plans for new and safer steps where families can comfortably sit together, along with fresh landscaping that will create a more welcoming seaside experience.

The project includes upgrades to the amphitheatre, improved parking and rejuvenated green spaces surrounding the pavilion. The design team aims to keep the project rooted in local heritage by using natural stone, beach pebbles and materials that reflect the character of the coastline. Community insights gathered through cultural mapping workshops are also shaping the design choices.

Public participation has already played a meaningful role. Community members shared their ideas in earlier sessions and their feedback is being used to refine the redevelopment. According to the city, the first phase of construction is expected to begin in February twenty twenty six, with work continuing over several years.

Environmental considerations are being incorporated as well. A newly adopted coastal setback line guides development and ensures that upgrades follow environmental regulations. The improvements at the pavilion will also link to ongoing work in the Fishermans Lane precinct, creating a more cohesive coastal zone.

Funding for the project is included in the City of Cape Town’s multi year budget through the Recreation and Parks Department. As the upgrades take shape, residents and visitors can look forward to a more vibrant and accessible seaside attraction that celebrates the past while preparing for the future.
