Big. Wild. Unforgettable.

That is the promise behind Lion Roars Hotels and Lodges’ newly launched Big Five Day Safaris, now available at Hlosi Game Lodge and Bukela Game Lodge on the Amakhala Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape.
Only fifty minutes from Gqeberha, this malaria free reserve offers travellers an easy way to experience the thrill of the African bush without committing to an overnight stay. It is the kind of experience that fits neatly into a tight itinerary yet feels rich and immersive from the moment guests arrive.
Families, couples and solo travellers are all welcome. Children from the age of six can join the guided game drives and private vehicles are available for younger families who want the freedom to explore at their own pace. It is safari made flexible and accessible, a match for the way many people travel today.
According to Vincent Bouwer, Chief Revenue Officer at Lion Roars Hotels and Lodges, modern travellers value convenience and meaningful experiences. These new Day Safaris offer both. Guests can step straight into the wild, enjoy expert guiding and return to their accommodation elsewhere without missing a beat.

The adventure begins at 09h00 with a warm check in at the dedicated Day Safari Welcome Centre. By 09h30 guests set out with experienced rangers who guide them through open plains, river valleys and thicketed landscapes alive with wildlife. The Big Five headline the experience, but the reserve’s varied ecosystems offer many remarkable sightings.
At midday a relaxed two course lunch awaits. It is a welcome pause to share stories, recharge and take in the beauty of the reserve. Full day guests return to the bush for an afternoon drive that often reveals animals not seen earlier. The light softens and the plains become a photographer’s dream scene.
Travellers can choose between two well priced options:
- The Half Day Safari includes a morning drive and lunch.
- The Full Day Safari includes a morning drive, lunch and an afternoon drive.
A minimum of two adults is required per vehicle and bookings must be made at least twenty four hours in advance. Reaching the reserve is simple via the N2 from Gqeberha, with clear signage guiding visitors to the Leeuwenbosch Country House entrance where staff escort them to the Welcome Centre.
Bouwer adds that the new offering brings the wilderness within reach for anyone who has limited time yet still wants the magic of Amakhala. It is a way to feel the stillness, excitement and raw beauty of the Eastern Cape in a single day.
