Swiss Alps light up with message of hope

Every evening after sunset until 11pm, the Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland lights up in a projection of the colours of the Swiss flag and shines over the nearby resort of Zermatt.

The display includes the word ‘hope’ and the instruction to ‘stay home’.

Another projection shows the Italian flag, as an act of encouragement and solidarity:

Ski organisers in Zermatt say they want to ‘show solidarity with all the people who are currently suffering and are grateful to all those who are helping to overcome the crisis’, according to the Daily Mail.

The illumination was set up by Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter.

Switzerland recently became the fifth European country to confirm more than 10,000 coronavirus infections, joining the ranks of Italy, Spain, France and Germany.
