Switzerland lights up the Matterhorn with SA flag

Posted on 26 April 2020

Switzerland has been paying tribute to countries by lighting up the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps with the flags of different nations. South Africa got it’s turn on April 24.

Light artist Gerry Hofstetter is behind the illuminations on the mountain in Zermatt to show solidarity in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The famous mountain draws thousands of tourists each year. The small town nestled below is home to around 6,000 people.

“South Africa is also affected by the virus. As a country of immigration, South Africa is a country of hope. We wish the population much courage and strength to overcome the crisis,” said Zermatt tourism in a tweet.

These projections have been ongoing since March 24. Some of the flags it has projected include those of Singapore, Morocco, China, South Korea and Thailand.
