The future of intercity travel is back with Jozi-Durban bullet train

South Africa’s long-discussed high-speed train connecting Johannesburg and Durban is back on the agenda.

According to Moneyweb, the Department of Transport has revived plans for the ambitious rail corridor and is seeking private-sector partners to bring it to life.

A Vision Re-Energised

The project aims to create a world-class rail line capable of carrying passengers between Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban at speeds of up to 300 km/h. If successful, it would transform long-distance travel, reducing the journey from more than six hours by road to around three by train.

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy confirmed that her department has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to attract ideas and funding models from both local and international investors.

Connecting City and Coast

For travellers, this could redefine the weekend getaway. Imagine sipping a cappuccino in Johannesburg in the morning and enjoying a seafood lunch overlooking the Indian Ocean by early afternoon.

Beyond convenience, the line promises to open up smaller towns along the route, unlocking fresh tourism opportunities and boosting investment in regional hospitality and transport sectors.

Early Stages but Big Potential

While the vision is exciting, the project remains in its planning phase. Feasibility studies are still underway, and timelines depend on the level of private-sector participation. The Department of Transport has emphasised that collaboration, not full government funding, will be key to success.

For now, South Africans can dream of a future where exploring between city and sea becomes faster, greener and more accessible.
