India’s famous tigress – known as ‘Supermom’ – has died due to old age complications at the Pench Tiger Reserve in central India on January 15.
The tiger gave birth to 29 cubs during her lifetime. Park chief Ashok Kumar Mishra commented that ‘it is rare for a tigress to give birth to 29 cubs, including five in one go, and successfully raise 25, this perhaps earned her the title of Supermom among wildlife lovers,’ reports Al Jazeera.
Supermom was 16 years old, and wildlife experts have credited her for maintaining the tiger population on the reserve, which has more than 130 tigers.
The reserve says on its website that it offers a ‘Typical representation of the wilderness of great Central Indian Highland, and an ‘Excellent habitat to harbor the Tiger, the highly endangered species.’ However, it is still one of the places in India that offers elephant rides to tourists.
The tigress was cremated in accordance with Hindu rites.
