Tour the world for free with a stranger

Posted on 19 February 2019

Most people would jump at the opportunity to travel the world for free. How does an action-packed trip that spans five continents over fifty days sound? The trick (there’s always a catch) is that you will be travelling with a complete stranger.

TourRadar (the largest online travel agency for multi-day tours), together with Intrepid Travel, is running a competition to send two people who have never met on a trip around the world to a number of surprise destinations. There will be a three-person camera crew filming the entire trip and the winners’ experiences. The prize is worth more than $22,000 USD (about R312,000) per person, and according to the travel site, TourRadar is looking for people who are ‘hungry for adventure, the element of surprise and new experiences’.

In order to qualify for selection, you will need to complete an application form on TourRadar’s website and create a two-minute YouTube video explaining why you’d like the trip and what a typical day in your life looks like.

If you are the outgoing type you may stand a chance, as people who stand out from the crowd and are willing to make a spectacle of themselves will get ‘serious bonus points’.

Entries need to be submitted by 24 March 2019 and the winner will be announced in April.

‘Multi-day touring is the easiest way possible for any traveller to experience the world in a relatively short amount of time,’ said TourRadar’s Chief Marketing Officer Michael Potscher. ‘Through our Tour the World campaign, we are creating the ultimate trip of a lifetime for two strangers that will inspire others to engage in life-enriching experiences through multi-day touring.’

Below is the video that calls for applications as well as some of the entries so far.
