South Africans heading to the United Kingdom will notice a major change to the visa process, which removes paperwork rather than adding to it, as per IOL reports.

The UK has officially completed its move to a fully digital immigration system, doing away with physical visa stickers and Biometric Residence Permits. In their place are electronic visas, known as eVisas, which now serve as the sole proof of immigration status.

For South African tourists, students and professionals travelling to the UK, this marks a significant shift in how visas are issued, accessed and verified.

No more visa stickers in your passport

The most noticeable change for South Africans applying for a UK visa is the disappearance of the familiar visa vignette inside your passport.

Once approved, your visa will exist as a secure digital record linked directly to your South African passport. Instead of receiving a physical document, applicants will be emailed their visa decision along with instructions to set up an online account with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

This account serves as your digital visa hub, storing your immigration status and allowing you to view or share your details as needed.

At UK airports, border officials will scan your passport, with your visa information appearing automatically in their system — no card, sticker or paperwork needed.

What exactly is an eVisa?

An eVisa is a digital confirmation of your permission to enter or remain in the United Kingdom. Rather than carrying physical proof, your visa status is securely stored online and electronically linked to your passport.

The system is designed to offer several practical benefits, including:

  • Faster processing at the UK border control
  • Less risk of documents being lost or stolen
  • Easy online access to your visa details
  • Secure sharing of “Right to Work” or “Right to Rent” checks using a digital share code

For travellers, it means fewer documents to keep track of and a smoother arrival experience.

A global move towards digital borders

The UK’s transition reflects a wider international shift towards technology-driven border systems focused on efficiency and security. For South Africans, it introduces a more streamlined way to manage visas — even if the absence of a passport sticker may take some getting used to.

Importantly, while the visa itself is now digital, the application process remains largely unchanged. South Africans must still apply online via the official UK government visa portal, following the same steps and requirements as before.

The difference is what happens after approval — signalling a new, paper-free era for travel to the United Kingdom.
