Virgin Atlantic relaunches direct service between Cape Town and London

Posted on 23 May 2022 By David Henning

Virgin Atlantic will be returning to Cape Town international this year for the first time since the onset of the pandemic, according to an announcement from Cape Town’s Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Virgin Atlantic is set to return on 5 November 2022, with a direct service between Cape Town and London’s Heathrow airport.

Before the Pandemic, the UK was South Africa’s dominant tourist market, accounting for 30% of international visitors. But with South Africa being listed on the UK’s notorious ‘red-list’ in December 2021, there was a drastic 90% drop in British visitors to South Africa.

The relaunch of Virgin Atlantic’s London-Cape Town route will hopefully bring a necessary boost to the city’s tourism industry.
