London pub opens arms to those alone on Christmas

Posted on 2 December 2019

Christmas is a time of year that is meant to be for family and joy, but there are some that do not have either when the jingle bells toll. A pub in London is offering lonely souls a reprieve on Christmas day, by offering a free lunch and Secret Santa’s to lift spirits.

The Alexandra began offering anyone spending Christmas on their own free pints over 11 years ago, and when they renovated and got a bigger kitchen four years ago, they have extended the gesture to a three-course meal as well.

Each year, owners Mick and Sara Dore welcome dozens of people into their pub on Christmas day, including older people, those who are new to London, and those who have missed their transport getting home for the holidays.

This year, they hope to welcome more than ever before.

The local community also gets involved, and grocery stores and neighbouring residents do not miss an opportunity to donate gifts and food. The waiters and waitresses are all volunteers, and volunteers also offer their time to help wrap presents for the guests.
