Last minute getaways before the December rush

Posted on 24 November 2025 By Miriam Kimvangu

Early summer in South Africa brings warm mornings, quiet roads and a sense of calm before the festive season begins.

It is the ideal moment to plan a quick escape before crowds fill coastal towns, nature reserves and countryside retreats. These are some of the destinations that shine in the early December window.

KwaZulu Natal Midlands

One of the most appealing choices for a last minute escape is the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. The region is known for its peaceful landscapes, country hospitality and gentle summer temperatures. Travellers can explore art studios, picnic beside scenic dams or follow the popular Midlands Meander. Accommodation ranges from cosy cottages to elegant lodges surrounded by rolling green hills. Since the area is within easy driving distance from both Durban and Johannesburg it suits a spontaneous weekend that does not require long travel plans. The beauty of the Midlands at this time of year is the mild weather, the quiet roads and the availability of short stay options that suit couples, families or solo travellers.

The West Coast

Another excellent option is the West Coast. This region experiences a calm early summer period before the holiday season arrives. Towns such as Langebaan, Paternoster and Yzerfontein offer relaxed beaches, charming harbour fronts and delicious local seafood. Visitors can enjoy kayaking, coastal walks and sunset views that feel almost private in the early December lull. The West Coast National Park remains a serene wildlife destination where travellers can spot antelope grazing near tidal lagoons and colourful birdlife along the shoreline. The entire region offers a refreshing alternative to the busier Atlantic coastline further south.

The Drakensberg

For travellers who prefer mountains and crisp evenings the Drakensberg remains a favourite. Clear summer skies, lush valleys and striking peaks create an inviting environment for hikers and nature lovers. The northern and central Berg offer scenic routes for both beginner and experienced hikers. Visitors can stay in nature lodges, mountain resorts or small chalets located near waterfalls and forested paths. This is also one of the best areas for families who want both adventure and comfort without the large festive season crowds.

The Cape Winelands

Wine lovers will appreciate a quick escape to the Cape Winelands. Early December offers warm weather and peaceful vineyards that are not yet filled with holiday traffic. Towns like Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Tulbagh provide excellent wine tasting experiences along with mountain views and historic architecture. Many estates offer seasonal menus and outdoor seating that makes the most of the long summer afternoons. It is also a convenient getaway for Cape Town residents who want a nearby retreat without the long drive.

Wildlife escapes in lesser known reserves

If your idea of a spontaneous escape includes wildlife sightings then consider the lesser known game reserves. Destinations such as Pilanesberg, Nambiti and Mabula offer lodges that cater well to short notice bookings. The heat of early summer draws animals to waterholes which improves game viewing opportunities. Travellers can enjoy morning drives, guided walks and spa treatments in peaceful surroundings that feel far removed from the pace of city life.

Eastern Cape Sunshine Coast

For beach lovers who want a quieter setting before the school holidays begin, the Eastern Cape Sunshine Coast is ideal. Stretching from Port Alfred to Kenton on Sea, the region offers long beaches, warm water and relaxed coastal communities. Canoeing along tidal rivers, horse riding on open beaches and browsing local craft markets form part of the gentle pace that defines this coastline. Early December offers ample space for travellers to enjoy the scenery without the rush associated with peak summer travel.
