The oldest official letterbox

When it comes to history, Makhanda is truly as historic as it gets. The town is home to the oldest official letterbox in South Africa. It is at St.Andrew’s College and is painted in the traditional post office red. In today’s fast-paced digital world, it is exciting to feel the nostalgia of sending hand-written letters via post. Plus, when you post a letter from this box, it receives a special frank.

Address: St. Andrew’s College, Cnr. Worcester & Somerset Street, Makhanda.

International Library of African Music

Fondly known as ILAM, the International Library of African Music was established in 1964. It is a researching, publishing and teaching centre for African traditional music. Although it is not strictly a museum, it houses more than two hundred African traditional musical instruments. It is a great place to learn more about the history of African music, as well as to explore an array of instruments from all across the continent.

Address: Rhodes University Campus Jamaat Khana, Prince Alfred St, Grahamstown, Makhanda, 6139.
