Two secretary birds take on hare in Masai Mara

Two secretary birds recently went after a scrub hare in the Masai Mara, Kenya and safari guide Grant Telfer was able to capture it on film.

This is quite an unusual sighting, as these birds normally prey on much smaller rodents and reptiles.

“I have not seen or heard of similar footage and having grown up in the bush and been guiding since 2004 this was a first,” Telfer told Latest Sightings. “We had seen them catch locusts, and small snakes in the past but never a mammal of such a size!”

Take a look:

The secretary bird, which proudly features on South Africa’s national coat of arms, stands 1.3m tall. They are mostly terrestrial but fly when in danger. They are endemic to sub-Saharan Africa.
