Woman trampled by elephants in Kruger identified

The 68-year-old woman who was tragically trampled to death by elephants in the northern region of the Kruger National Park on Saturday has been identified. 

The woman has been identified as Petronella Margaretha Viljoen, better known as Ronel, was from Brummeria in Pretoria, reports The Lowvelder.

According to guests who were allegedly visiting the Sirheni Bushveld Camp when the incident occurred, Viljoen left her cottage unnoticed in the late afternoon for a walk on May 10.

She exited the camp through the gate, as captured by security cameras.

The camp’s visitors added that Viljoin’s husband had reported her missing when he noticed her absence.

The woman’s body was discovered later that evening at approximately 23:00, by park rangers and staff who initiated an immediate search.

The incident was reported to Saselamani Police Station near the Kruger National Park’s Punda Maria Gate, reports state.

As per The Lowvelder, police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that Viljoen encountered elephants after exiting the northern Kruger camp, which led to her death.

Reporting to Rekord, Ledwaba confirmed that family members of the deceased have been informed regarding her passing, and the investigation surrounding it.

“The exact circumstances remain under investigation,” says Ledwaba.
